holiday trivia:
Trees that remained green all year have had a special meaning to many civilizations over the centuries. In fact it was believed that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts and illness. Some cutlures thought that the days of winter were so short because the sun god was sick. The winter solstice was celebrated using evergreens acting as a cure. The German Christians are credited with starting the decorated tree tradition in the 16th century.

Christmas
With the harvest over, and the winter solstice close at hand, Romans began preparing for the most eagerly anticipated festival of the year, Saturnalia. Beginning on December 17, Saturn, the god of agriculture, was honored with a week long hedonistic reverie. After reaping the summer's bounty, food and drink were plentiful. During these days, the entire social order of the Roman Empire was turned upside down. Control of the city was relinquished to the peasants. Masters knelt beside their slaves to do their bidding. Gifts were given, debts were forgiven and money was lavishly spent.

The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back to a monk named St. Nicholas. It is believed that this holy man was born in the year 280 CE in what is now modern day Turkey. One popular story is that Nicholas gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled around helping the needy and the poor. Santa Claus is a shortened form of the Dutch Sint Niklaas. |

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer is the creation of Robert L. May, a copywriter at the Montgomery Ward Department Store. In 1939 as a part of a store promotion, he wrote a poem about a young reindeer who was teased by the other reindeer. The story sold 2.5 million copies in 1939 and has become a popular song and a television movie. |

Perhaps it was during Saturnalia that Augustus, the first Emperor of Rome, realized that festivals such as this came at a price, and as it says at the beginning of chapter two of the Gospel According to Luke, he "...decreed that all the world should be taxed." Every Roman citizen returned to their place of birth in order to register for this tax. Even though she was with child, Mary made the difficult journey back to Joseph's home of Bethlehem to be counted. The city was crowded with others doing the same and as there was no room in the inn they had to sleep in a stable. It was in these humble surroundings that the Christ child was born. |

A menorah can be any shape or size. There are some very modern interpretations out there. The only requirement is that the flames are separated enough so that they will not appear too big and resemble a pagan bonfire. |

This is a great afternoon get together for close family and friends. Call upon the bakers in the group to help out. In the end everyone walks away with a holiday gift. |

In the early years of Christianity, the day of the birth of Christ was not celebrated. In fact, the Bible does not inform us when He was born. In an effort to appease the pagans remaining in Rome who longed for a return to the traditions of Saturnalia, Pope Julius I shrewdly adopted December 25 as the Feast of the Nativity in 340. 500 years later, Christmas had spread throughout Christendom. and was customarily celebrated as an interesting blend of the irreverent Roman party and the reverent Catholic feast. |

Hanukkah
In 168 BCE, Antiochus, the Greek King of Syria, seized the Jews' Holy Temple. Jewish religious practices were outlawed and the Temple was dedicated to the worship of Zeus. Having their Temple and property confiscated angered the Jews enough to fight back against heavily armed Greek soldiers. During the uprising, many Jews were forced into hiding. The High Priest, Mattathias, placed his son, Judah Maccabee in charge of the growing army. Outnumbered and ill equipped, the Jews still succeeded in defeating the Greek Army.

Returning to Jerusalem, the Jews found their beloved Temple ransacked. The remnants of the golden menorah were collected and repaired and the Temple was restored. They decided that the Temple should be rededicated in a large ceremony which included the relighting of the menorah. Unfortunately, there was only a small flask of oil, not enough to keep the flame rekindled until more could be obtained. Miraculously, the flame burned for eight days, time enough to get the needed oil to keep the menorah lit. Hanukkah is the recognition of the dedication of the Temple. This eight day celebration commemorates the miracle and is accompanied by lighting candles in a menorah, one for every night the oil burned. |
