If you really want to celebrate the Fourth of July in true American style, then you should have one of the most American desserts there are... the ice cream sundae.

The French have their glace and the Italians their gelato, but we Americans, never known for our refinement, have taken the frozen dessert to its extreme.

Below you will find out how to create an ice cream sundae bar, perfect with a round of holiday fireworks!

The following sauces are a must: chocolate (although we prefer hot fudge), and caramel (especially good with butter pecan ice cream). There are also some good fruit toppings such as blueberry or red raspberry. If you are a little wild at heart, try something different like dessert toppings made for cheesecake, apple cinnamon syrup, three-berry chipotle sauce or a raspberry jalapeno sauce. For coffee lovers, you may want to try hazelnut coffee concentrate syrup drizzled on top of vanilla ice cream. For the adults, flavorful dessert liqueurs such as Kahlua or Bailey’s Irish Cream taste great on ice cream also.

As far as toppings go you are only limited by your imagination. Try colored sprinkles, colored sugars, chocolate chips, chopped walnuts, pecans and peanuts, malted milk powder, yogurt chips, shredded coconut, nonpareil seeds, peanut butter chips, mini M&M’s, toffee chips, butterscotch chips, as well as crumbled crumbled Oreo cookies and brownie bits. Keep in mind the number guests and don't over indulge too much.

Don't forget! Some people like fresh friut on their sundaes. Bananas are a must. But also think of pineapple chunks, mandarin oranges, blueberries or raspberries. Finally whipped cream, maraschino cherries, lots of sundae dishes, plenty of napkins and glasses of ice water. Whew!
