The fleur is a stylized French lily. Although it has appeared on the coats of arms of many European royalty, it is especially associated with France. In North America it is the symbol of the Boy Scouts.

The fleur de lys napkin has a very elegant, upright design. You can leave the "ears" up for something a little more streamlined. We inserted a doubloon into the front pocket, but it would also be a great place for a name card.

Press a square napkin flat. Because this napkin is supposed to stand up, you should use a little spray starch to give the material some body. Lay it in front of you on angle, like a diamond.
Bring the bottom corner, the one closest to you, almost up to the top. Leave about a 1 inch space between the edges of the sides. Press.
Fold the two bottom corners of the triangle up towards the top. The sides should not meet in the middle, leave a gap of about 2 inches. The 3 folded tips should all be at the same height. Press.
Fold the bottom up towards the top. Once again leave about an inch gap between this fold and the 3 tips of the previous folds. Press.
This is the tricky part. Carefully turn the napkin over. Take one of the bottom corners and tuck it into the fold of the opposite corner. Play with it until you are satisfied and it will stand on its own.
Take the flat top of the fold you just made, and fold it down about an inch. Press. This is what the napkin should look like as it stands. You can leave it like this or...
Fold down the two sides flaps for a true fleur de lys.
